Notes

New Order's first single after renaming the band from Joy Division to New Order. Originally recorded and played by Joy Division, it was re-recorded at Eastern Artists Studios, New Jersey. Produced by [[artist:Martin Hannett]] and with Bernard Sumner on lead vocals. All covers were designed by [[artist:Peter Saville (2)]]. The 7" and first 12" were released on 6 March 1981. The 7" has a stamped gold-bronze sleeve. It charted on 14 March 1981 at position 39 and peaked at position 34 the week after. Due to the chart success, 150.000 records were pressed until July 1981. However, only 70.000 copies were sold until then. The first edition 12" sleeve comes with gold typography on a forest green background, with 25.000 records pressed (until 17 July 1981). After Gillian Gilbert joined the band, it was decided to re-record the song with her on guitar. It was then re-released in September 1981. This time the cover had a cream background with a light blue stripe and black type. This second version was included on all later compilations, e.g. [m=41020]. For the second cover, there are three different editions: The 1st version with runout-groove space of 35 mm on each side. Side A runout groove etching: "This Is Why Events Unnerve Me", pressed by WEA, West Drayton. This version of the record was also released in leftover green sleeves. The 1983 MVS repress, with runout groove space of 35 mm on each side. Side A groove etching: "Watching Love Grow - Forever". The 1984 Linguaphone repress, with runout-groove space of 37 mm on side A and 35mm on side B and a characteristic 25mm stamper ring. Also exists with a 32mm stamper ring (likely after 1986 pressed by Adrenalin). Another repress with an A2/ B1 matrix and the track groove is filling the entire side of the record. Side A groove etching: "This Is Why Events Unnerve Me". The B-side track "In A Lonely Place" is the same version on all the original pressings (both green and cream/blue editions.) However, another version of the track circulates on some later pressings: the digital thunderclaps occur at different times. To tell which version of In A Lonely Place you have: Original correct mix has a digital thunderclap at 3:20 and again at 5:15. Both of these are not present on the alternate mix. The alternate mix then has multiple thunderclaps between 5:30 and 6:15 which are not present on the original correct mix. This version is also used on [m=41020].
