Fifth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on October 27, 1982, by Warner Bros. Records. The title track was a protest against nuclear proliferation. 1999 was Prince's breakthrough album, although not as successful as his next album, Purple Rain. The album was his first top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States (peaking at number 9, besting that peak at number 7 after his death in 2016) and became the fifth best-selling album of 1983 overall, eventually being certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA. 1999 became his first top 10 hit in countries outside the United States. [The first CD edition](https://www.discogs.com/release/3847430-Prince-1999) omitted "D.M.S.R." due to a 64-minute length limit imposed by the major CD manufacturers at the time. The track was included beginning in 1991. Meanwhile, [all cassette copies](https://www.discogs.com/release/382377-Prince-1999) moved "Free" to appear after "D.M.S.R" to close the first side and balance the runtime of each side. [A single-LP version](https://www.discogs.com/release/9243822-Prince-1999) omitting four songs was issued in various countries across South America, Europe and Asia in 1983, and was reissued worldwide as part of Record Store Day 2018. A [European cassette variant](https://www.discogs.com/release/8309547-Prince-1999), which added "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" and "D.M.S.R." to that single LP tracklist, has not been reissued as of 2026.
