Joy Division's first 7" single on [[label:Factory]]. Released on November 16, 1979 as edition of 10.000 in a textured sleeve. Recorded at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, between July 28 and August 4, 1979. Producer: Martin Hannett. The 12" was released in February 1981. The single never entered the official UK single charts but peaked at # 4 in the UK Indie Charts where it stayed for at least 77 weeks until 1982. However, the single peaked at #2 in the New Zealand single charts in September 1981, where it stayed for 6 weeks in the Top 50. After a re-entry in July 1984, it peaked at #24 and stayed for another 4 weeks in the Top 50 single charts. In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Transmission" at number 20 in its list of the 50 "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever". There are five different 7" sleeve types, either textured or plain printed: Textured sleeves: 1) With squared cutout at the top, rounded glue flaps, white G+L on the rear (e.g. [r=1523740]). 2) With round cutout at the top, straight glue flaps, purple G+L on the rear (e.g. [r=11540]). Plain (or glossy): 1) With squared cutout at the top, rounded glue flaps, white G+L (e.g. [r=3599210]). 2) No cutout, straight glue flaps, white blocks (e.g. [r=3258631]). 3) With rounded cutout at the top, straight glue flaps, purple G+L (e.g. [r=6242097]). The first pair of lacquers (A1 / B1) was cut in September 1979 by Graeme Durham at The Sound Clinic and pressed at WEA West Drayton (e.g. [r=1523740]). Repressed by MVS Record pressing in 1982 ([r=1505567]). The second pair of lacquers (A2 / B1) was cut in February 1981 by George Peckham (Porky) and pressed by Lyntone (March 1981 - [r=9825229]). First repress by Tranco in mid 1981 ([r=14738712]). By that time, ca. 39.000 copies were pressed. Three more repressings by MVS Record Pressing between 1982 and 1984 ([r=12621810], [r=3258631], [r=11540]). Last repressing by Immediate Sound in 1988 ([r=6242097]). Vinyl can come in either sleeve.
