US label. Shanachie Records was founded in 1972 by [[artist:Richard Nevins]] and [[artist:1829534]]. According to [[artist:1809932]] (Secret Museum of Music), it is one of the largest independent record labels in the world, and is currently distributed by [[label:E1 Music]]. Starting as a specialty fiddle music label, they released work by Celtic groups such as [[artist:Planxty]], [[artist:Clannad]] and [[artist:The Chieftains]]. Other genres on the label include Latin American, African music, soul, country, reggae and ska. In 1989 they acquired Yazoo Records from [[artist:Nick Perls]]. This allowed them to release vintage jazz and blues recordings. The label name is from the Irish word *seanchaí*, a storyteller. The early label design was made by [[artist:651569]] in 1975.
