About MC Shan
[[artist:Shawn Moltke]], better known as MC Shan, was born on September 6, 1965, in Queensbridge, Queens, New York City.
The American rapper, songwriter, and record producer got his break in 1983 when future [[label:Cold Chillin']] Records head [[artist:Tyrone Williams]] caught Shan attempting to steal his car. The incident opened the door to a music career, aided by his family tie to cousin and veteran hip-hop producer [[artist:Marley Marl]].
Joining Marley Marl's Juice Crew, Shan debuted on MCA Records with the 1985 single "Feed the World" before formally aligning with Cold Chillin'. Following early singles like "Marley Marl Scratch" (1985) and the classic Queensbridge anthem "The Bridge" (1986)—which triggered the famous "Bridge Wars" feud with [[artist:Boogie Down Productions]]—he released his debut studio LP, Down by Law, in 1987. Entirely produced by Marley Marl, the album established Shan's trademark b-boy persona. He followed up with Born to Be Wild in 1988. For his third album, Play It Again, Shan (1990), he adopted a more mature lyricism and expanded production duties.
In the 1990s, Shan shifted focus to behind-the-scenes production work, most notably producing and featured on Canadian reggae-pop artist Snow's 1992 chart-topping global hit single "Informer" - [[master:96610]].
