The original album version of Messages was due to be used. However, McCluskey objected to this version and wanted to re-record the song. Most copies of the original 10" pressing with the album version were scrapped, but a handful did escape destruction. Some of these were given away as part of a competition for the OMD fan club in 1980. This is the original grey two-tone label version, with the incorrect Valentino credit, only distinguished from the [original withdrawn 10"](http://www.discogs.com/release/4383681) by the matrix runout information and track timing. Later editions feature different coloured record labels, including another [Grey](http://www.discogs.com/release/3332089), and [Red](http://www.discogs.com/release/1920583), [Green](http://www.discogs.com/release/2559439), and a [Pink/White combination](http://www.discogs.com/release/1089169). These labels correctly credit Mike Howlett for the production.
