"Monosylabik" was the very first music heard in advance of the long-awaited "Private Press" LP. As usual, there was much confusion and hand-wringing as it did not convey the by-then formulaic Mo' Wax sound. It remains unique in Shadow's body of work, as every sonic element on the song emanates from one sample. * About all MCA 25726-1 promo: This single was initiated by Shadow in the US. The jackets are heavy, "paste-on" stock, and all of the stickers were hand-applied. There are 10 different variations of the cover, with 100 copies existing of each version. The covers and label stamps were assembled by Shadow, Keith Tamashiro, Jay Boberg (general manager of MCA at the time and co-founder of I.R.S. Records,) and several other MCA staff in Boberg's office within Universal. Some copies were distributed to key DJs within the UK, and the rest went to various college and retail outlets. It's unlikely that very many of those who received it had any idea what it was or what to do with it, which Shadow says was precisely the point. The B-side contains a unique "Letter From Home" not found anywhere else.
