Wing Records

Est. 1939 US Part of Mercury

Also appears as "Wing" only. Please also consider [[label:127327]] if it appears on the release. Wing Records was a subsidiary of [[label:Mercury]] Records founded in 1955 that enjoyed its greatest initial success during the mid-1950s, mostly with vocalist [[artist:Nick Noble]]. It released singles briefly in 1955 and 1956 but focus quickly shifted to LPs. It became a budget reissue label in August 1958 in the US, and was launched as a similar budget label by Philips, Mercury's European owner, in the UK in February 1965 (UK Wing LPs had a logo that read **A Philips Records Product** on their covers; Philips and Mercury catalog material were issued on the label). Mercury in the US retired the label along with [[label:Smash (4)]] and [[label:Fontana]] in 1970. In 1987, under Mercury president Ed Eckstein, Wing was revived as an R&B label and had successes with [[artist:Vanessa Williams]], [[artist:Tony! Toni! Toné!]] and [[artist:Brian McKnight]]. The label was deactivated in 1995 and its remaining artists (by then only Williams and McKnight) were transferred to parent label Mercury. For unofficial releases, see [[label:Wing Records (3)]].
