Record Label
Greek record company formed in October 1990 when [[label:EMI Greece S.A.]] purchased a majority stake in [[label:271823]] following a memorandum of understanding signed at the 1990 [[label:Midem]] in Cannes between the CEO of [[label:EMI Ltd.]] and [[artist:Μάκης Μάτσας]]. According to the contract, Mákis Mátsas undertook to be the chairman and CEO of the new company for at least 5 years, after which ΕΜΙ Ltd. had the option to increase its stake. It was identified that Minos-EMI S.A. would command one-third of the Greek market, as Μίνως Μάτσας & Υιός Α.Ε. held a 22% market share, while EMI Greece S.A. held 9%. Since 2001, Minos-EMI was the sole EMI label operation in Greece, following the closure of [[label:264607]]. "[[label:EMI Music Greece]]" was the moniker used to refer to Minos-EMI in an international context, following the EMI Group naming convention for national EMI offices around the world. Between 2002 and 2004, Minos-EMI S.A. handled the distribution of [[label:BMG]] in Greece, having acquired the rights after the closure of [[label:207043]] Following the completion of the acquisition of EMI Group by [[label:Universal Music Group]] in September 2012, several European EMI operations were placed for sale to comply with European competition laws, and were subsequently acquired by [[label:Warner Music Group]]. In the Greek market hitherto, Universal Music Group had its label operation, [[label:Universal Music Greece]], which was chosen over Minos-EMI S.A. to be included in the sale of European assets. As a result, Greece was the only European country where a Universal Music Group office was chosen for divestiture, instead of an EMI Group office. Universal Music Greece was acquired by Greek investors and relaunched as an independent label named [[label:Cobalt Music (2)]].
