DreamWorks Records

Est. 1939 US Part of Universal Music Group

An eclectic pop-oriented label that was founded in 1996 as a part of the budding DreamWorks SKG empire. Initially distributed by Geffen/MCA, the label founded by the "G" of SKG, David Geffen, it switched to Interscope/Universal during the merger of the [[label:MCA]] and [[label:PolyGram]] families of labels that formed the [[label:Universal Music Group]]. The label was run by industry legends [[artist:Lenny Waronker]] and [[artist:Mo Ostin]], who brought their artist-friendly philosophy to the label after they were forced out of [[label:Warner Bros. Records]] during WEA's great management shift of the 1990s. DreamWorks SKG never lived up to its potential: the label was sold to Universal in 2005, and the movie studio was sold to Paramount Pictures/Viacom the same year. The label was shut down and absorbed by Geffen/Interscope/Universal shortly afterward, and the studio became a small subdivision of Paramount. The DreamWorks Records logo was the last completed project of the artist Roy Lichtenstein.
